Peruvian Sacrificial Site Contains the Remains of Over 140 Children | M.P. Pellicer

An archaeological dig at Huanchaquito-Las Llamas in Peru was found to contain the mummified remains of 140 children that were part of a mass sacrifice some time during the 15th century. The victims were both boys and girls between the ages of five and fourteen.


Examination of the remains found the children's hearts were ripped from their bodies. A study of the cranial modification and stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen, indicates the children of both sexes were taken from different regions and groups throughout the Chimu empire.

Archaeologists had previously found a few hundred skulls in the the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan the site of present day Mexico City, however ongoing research has found this was only the tip of the iceberg and the human sacrifices numbered in the thousands.


Archaeologists were aware the Aztec performed human sacrifices, but the truth of how many were killed in the most horrific fashion became undeniable in 2015. Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) found what was known as a "trophy rack" near the the site of the Templo Mayor, which is present Mexico City.

Ancient Chinese Cemetery Contains Remains of Human Sacrificial Victims

In northwest China in tombs near Mogou village, archaeologists have found hundreds of graves that contain the remains of victims of human sacrifice. This cemetery dates back more than 4,000 years.

The excavation of the tombs took place between 2009 to 2011. The majority of them are believed to belong to the Qijia culture. Not only were there individual burials, but in some cases entire families were interred with their heads facing northwest.

Adjacent to the remains were small rooms containing pottery, as well as necklaces, bronze sabers, maces, axes daggers and knives.
