These Things Don't Happen in Nice Towns | M.P. Pellicer

Karen Klaas was raped and then strangled with a pantyhose. Despite the attention the case received since she had been married to Bill Medley from the Righteous Brothers, eventually the investigation went cold, and stayed that way for decades.

Karen was attacked on January 30, 1976. She lived in Hermosa Beach, California and had returned home at 9 a.m. after dropping off her son Damien at McMartin Preschool. Her older son was with his grandfather.

Chasing the Muddy Monster | M.P. Pellicer

During the summer of 1973, near the Big Muddy River on the outskirts of Murphysboro, there was a sighting of a tall, white-haired creature by residents of the town. Until this day, it remains an unsolved mystery.

After 50 years, the sighting of a white-haired, mud-caked creature seen by residents of Murphysboro stirs the imagination, but there are still no definitive answers as to what they saw.

Paranormal Dimensions | Interview with Allen Slonaker | Stories of the Supernatural

Allen grew up in a Victorian era home in Richmond's downtown. It was there that he had his first brushes with the paranormal. That sparked a lifelong interest in history and the paranormal which ultimately lead him to join the Center for Paranormal Research and Investigation. Allen has spent the last twenty years as a police officer having served as a criminal investigator and now as a police trainer.

The Bad Seed | M.P. Pellicer

The United States had gained its independence from Britain for only a few years, when a 19-year-old named Barnett Davenport came to work for a family on their farm. Little did they know they had allowed the devil in their midst, who later claimed he was haunted by thoughts of murder.

Barnett Davenport could be called a bad seed. He was born in 1760, and thievery came easily to him. By the time he was 15 years old he had a fearsome reputation as a robber.

The Babies' Corpses | M.P. Pellicer

In 2005, the Allegheny County coroner's office visited the McKeesport garage of Robert B. Winston, Jr. a former funeral director. As soon as they set foot inside the investigators knew they were dealing with death.

The odor was awful inside the detached garage at the 1800 block of Evans Avenue. The smell came from stacked boxes from which the smell was emanating, which were clearly labeled as fetal remains.

The Fate of the Marlborough | M.P. Pellicer

In 1913, a telegram was sent from New Zealand to London, which solved a 23-year-old mystery.

The Marlborough sailed from Lyttleton, New Zealand with several passengers and a crew of 33 under the command of Captain W. Hird in January, 1890. She was a vessel of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's fleet, measuring 228 feet long, 35 feet broad and 21 feet deep with 1124 tons. The ship carried a cargo of frozen mutton and wool.

The Hexed House | M.P. Pellicer

It was after 1912 that the first houses were built overlooking Benedict Canyon in Beverly Hills. A spacious, Bavarian-style house was constructed at 9820 Easton Drive in 1930 for Paul Bern, an MGM executive. Why grisly death was to become a familiar visitor there remains a mystery.

Completed when Prohibition was the law of the land, the architects hid a bar behind a book case. However there would be darker secrets the house would keep as the years passed.

The Wreck of the Coos Bay | M.P. Pellicer

On October 22, 1927, the lumber schooner Coos Bay went wrecked outside Golden Gate off Mile Rock, while a thick fog covered the area. It had a crew of 30 and no passengers, but it seemed in the coming days that there was a 31st person on the ship.

The ship started as the collier Vulcan owned by the Pacific States Lumber Company. In it last incarnation it was named the S.S. Coos Bay. She was captained by B.W. Olsen.

The Spirit of Mr. Sherman | M.P. Pellicer

In November, 1873, Almon P. Sherman was general superintendent in the American Express Company in Buffalo, New York. He would be the last person would come back to haunt his wife a few months after his death.

It was a Monday and Mr. Sherman wasn't feeling well. He drove to see his physician, Dr. King. The doctor gave him a prescription and told him to go home as soon as possible. He made a stop at the drug store, and took a seat to wait for his order. Suddenly he dropped off the chair and died on the spot. It turned out a large blood vessel in his heart ruptured. He was known to suffer from angina pectoris.

The Tradition of All Souls' Day | M.P. Pellicer

All Souls' Day is celebrated November 2, and is dedicated to those have died and have not reached heaven. They are either in purgatory or unhappy ghosts.

There are three days that are frequently confused with dealing with the spirits of the departed: Halloween, October 31, which is believed to be when the veil is thinnest between this world, and those of the dead; All Saints is a church-wide holy day of obligation and normally celebrated on November 1, it’s also known as All Hallow’s Day, and it is dedicated to the saints and martyrs of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven; and November 2, All Souls' Day, is the one where remembrance is made of those that have died especially family members, but there are special efforts made to appease the ghosts of those who have no family and have been forgotten, because these spirits in their unhappiness can cause a lot of trouble for the living.

What Happened to Julie's Body? | M.P. Pellicer

Julie Mott's body disappeared in August, 2015. It was given to the Mission Park Funeral Home, and what happened to it is still a mystery.

Julie died on August 8, from cystic fibrosis. Her family attended services at Mission Park Funeral Home on August 15, which was her 26th birthday. The day of the service, her family left except Bill Wilburn, her ex-boyfriend who stayed behind for 15 minutes. The employees escorted him to the door, and they left soon after, activating the alarm system on the way out.

A Fatal Name | M.P. Pellicer

When Freda Lesser was murdered in 1919, there was a comparison made to the killing of Freda Ward in 1897, not only because of their name, but because they were slaughtered over love.

In July, 1919, the murder of a girl made the newspapers. Mostly because she was the victim of "morbid love" and that her name was Freda.

The Memphis Murderess | M.P. Pellicer

In the winter of 1892, a gruesome murder was committed in public by a young woman, a graduate of the Higbee School for Young Ladies, where butchery was not on their curriculum.

January 1892, Memphis, Tennessee

The city of Memphis was rocked by a scandalous murder that took place in daytime, in full view of various witnesses. There was no mystery as to who committed the crime, but the reason for the killing, caused tongues to wag for years.

Blue Ghost Tunnel | M.P. Pellicer

In 1876, an arched, stone tunnel was built under the Grand Trunk railroad tracks in Niagara Falls. So how did something built as a drainage passage become known as the "Screaming Tunnel" or the "Blue Ghost Tunnel"?

The Merritton Tunnel was completed in 1876, and opened in 1881. Using limestone, about 1,000 Irish immigrants worked on the project that spanned over 700 feet. Allowing traffic to cross the Welland Canal in St. Catherines, Ontario was the original purpose of the tunnel. The canal acted as a highway for boats travelling between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

The Mimics | M.P. Pellicer

When we think of aliens, we picture something strange with large black eyes. Something that doesn't look human. But in some cases these beings have learned very well how to mimic us.

Is it mimicry, camouflage or are they partly like us, at least how they look on the outside?

How do they betray themselves? Perhaps with an evil grin, at the most inappropriate time. Think of The Joker in the Batman comics, or a clown that despite the face paint they can't quite hide that it's all a lie.

Black Magic Manor | M.P. Pellicer

Boleskine House sits on the southeast side of Loch Ness and has a history of death dating back to the 10th century, when according to legend it was built atop the ruins of a Scottish kirk that burnt to the ground with its congregants trapped inside. And this was only the beginning.

The building was constructed in the 1760s by Colonel Archibald Fraser of Lovat (1736-1815) as a hunting lodge at Inverfarigaig, Scotland.

The Silent Woman | M.P. Pellicer

It was 1879 when Frances Hranuelli fell in love with a sea captain named Herbert Schrady, but love doesn't always bring happiness in its wake.

She came from a Yugoslavian family living in San Francisco. Her relatives did not approve of the relationship, so they were probably glad when he sailed to Europe in charge of a merchant sailing vessel. It was reported to have gone down in the Straits of Gibraltar, and word reached Frances that her lover died, but she refused to believe it. There was a violent argument among them, and she took a vow that she would never open her lips in speech. She believed her family intercepted his letters to her, and tried to keep them apart.

Honeymooners and Murder at Niagara Falls | M.P. Pellicer

Niagara Falls has been a favorite destination for honeymooners for decades. Like a magnet, it also draws daredevils and those wishing to release themselves from this mortal coil.

Niagara Falls is made up of three waterfalls that are 18,000 years old. Two in the United States and one in Canada. Horseshoe Falls spans the border of both countries, and empties into the Niagara River; it's the largest of the three. The falls have a vertical drop of more than 165 feet.

Blame it on Bigfoot | M.P. Pellicer

Modern-day Sasquatch lore paints this cryptid as being very wary of man, and watching him only from afar, however Native American tribes for centuries have painted a different picture of Bigfoot. They describe how given the chance they would snatch up women or children and take them away never to be seen again.

Some tribes believed Bigfoot would take humans to feed on them, others believed they used them for sexual purposes.

Some tribes believed Bigfoot would take humans to feed on them, others believed they used them for sexual purposes.

So how did Sasquatch's nature become so different in modern times?

A Ghost Story From 1884 | M.P. Pellicer

It was a roomy, but old fashioned house. A low, two-story structure built in the shape of a T; it had a cluster of tall chimneys in the middle and three gables hidden in ivy. When built it had been quite out of town, but soon cottages and villas surrounded the high wall enclosing the grounds. The lawn was shaded with old trees and the garden had thickets of lilac and snowball.

Mrs. Gage lived there for 40 years; the last 20 she had lived only on the ground floor. She was an invalid and lived a secluded life. She had made little effort to keep the property up, and it decayed as she did herself. She died and it was placed for sale.

The Secret History of Tartaria | M.P. Pellicer

Tartary is the historical name for Siberia and Central Asia. There has always been a persistent rumor of a hidden past.

The Tartarian Empire was thought to be a lost civilization that enjoyed advanced technology and culture to go with it. This covered the area of Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China and the Russian Far East (Chinese Tartary).

Alien Betrayal | M.P. Pellicer

What are the intentions of beings from another part of the universe? We know about ET calling home, so what should earthlings do when extraterrestrials call us? According to scientists we shouldn't hang up, we should just not answer at all.

Advances in technology have allowed astronomers to scour the far reaches of space for any signs of alien life. However despite sightings of UFOs and stories of close encounters, we have yet to produce definite evidence of extraterrestrial life, either intelligent or microbial.

When the Earth is the Hungriest | M.P. Pellicer

Pachamama Raymi is celebrated on August 1, every year. This festival dates to pre-Hispanic times like the Mayan new year. She is an ancient female deity worshiped by the Mesoamericans and their descendants, even though originally the sun was the main god of the Incas.

Pachamama is made from the Quechua word "pacha" which means space, and mama for mother.

For the Aymara and the Quechua who have lived in northwestern Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru for hundreds of years the date signifies the beginning of the month when the Earth rests. This is the coldest season of the year in the southern hemisphere. This is when the earth is the hungriest.

Zona's Revenge | M.P. Pellicer

Since time immemorial there have been stories of the spirits of murder victims coming back to point a finger at their killer and seek justice for themselves.

Such is the sad story of Zona Heaster Shue who lived in rural West Virginia at the turn of the 20th century.

ZONA AND THE STRANGER

Born Elva Zona Heaster in 1873, in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, Zona’s life is something of a mystery before she met her eventual husband Erasmus Stribbling “Trout” Shue in 1896. Shockingly only a year prior to their meeting, the records of Greenbrier County indicate that when she was twenty-two years old on November 29, 1895, she bore an illegitimate male child, who’s supposed father was an unskilled laborer named George Woldridge.

The Nameless Thing of Berkeley Square | M.P. Pellicer

50 Berkeley Square is a 4-story, brick townhouse in Mayfair. In the late 19th century it became known as one of the most haunted houses in London.

A murderous unnamed thing was said to be responsible for several deaths in the home, but there were other suspects mentioned throughout the years.

There are stories of a ghost that haunts the 4th floor attic (others say the 2nd) of 50 Berkeley Square. The structure has been referred to as "the most haunted house in London". Others argue it is not a ghost at all but an amphibious, predatory cryptid, reminiscent of Lovecraft's Cthulu's pantheon.

Ghosts of South Florida | M.P. Pellicer

Over the years I have had several ghost stories sent anonymously to me, and it's these quaint and subtle stories of hauntings that I find so fascinating, because you realize that ghosts make their presence known in the most mundane of settings, and sometimes it's only in hindsight that we realize exactly what we were experiencing. I have excluded surnames and exact addresses in order to protect the privacy of families. The following are those stories:

Uncle Charles

My family owns an old home in rural Davie. The tiny home was hand-built by my great-uncle (via marriage) - a person I have never met. His name was Charles C. and he and his wife, Betty, lived there.

Forty Years of Exorcisms at a Miami Hospital | M.P. Pellicer

In 1974, an article appeared titled, Exorcism Daily Occurrence at Miami Jackson Hospital. Your first thought is this was due to the notorious film, The Exorcist.

However, according to Dr. Sukhdeo, the director of the Crisis Intervention Center at Miami Jackson Hospital at that time, the influx of patients as many as 900 in one month, had nothing to do with the film. He described how patients came in asking for evil spirits to be driven from their body, apparently believing that their symptoms, whether mental or physical, were demonic in their origin.

The Ghosts of LaLaurie Mansion | M.P. Pellicer

In New Orlean's Vieux Carre sits a house with an old-fashioned facade. Even before the turn of the 20th century, the Franco-Spanish residents of the old faubourg would whisper, "la maison est hantee",

After nightfall many walked past it with hurried steps. They were afraid to peer upwards and see the figure of a ghost child that haunted the rooftop once decorated by a latticed belvedere.

The three-storied home at 1140 Royal Street (Rue Royale) stood empty and ruined for many years.

The Hopkinsville Goblins | M.P. Pellicer

A story of a family's night of terror

On the night of August 21, 1955, Russell Greenwell, Hopkinsville’s (Kentucky) police chief received an unexpected call at his home from the officer on call. He jumped into his clothes and drove to the station. There he met several scared adults and children. The family lived a few miles away in an area known as Kelly Station. He could tell by the look on their faces that something really happened to this group of people.

Silhouette in the Sky | M.P. Pellicer

Mystery of Flying Humanoids and Other Cryptids

On April 26, 1986, the No. 4 reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in northern Ukraine experienced a lethal nuclear accident. Several explosions culminated in an open-air reactor releasing radioactive contamination for nine days. In the aftermath stories circulated of a flying humanoid figure with glowing red eyes seen days before the incident.

THE DEAD MAN TRAPPED INSIDE A MANNEQUIN | M.P. Pellicer

About 150 years ago a French taxidermist named Jules Verreaux created a diorama named Lions Attacking a Dromedary, which portrays a man battling two lions.

Since it was first placed on the display, many have marveled at how realistic the man’s face was, and a discovery made as to what’s really under the plaster made it clear why it appeared so lifelike.

In 1869, two years after this taxidermy diorama also known as Arab Courier Attacked by Lions was created, it was shipped off to the American Museum of Natural History in New York.

GHOSTS OF THE MAGIC CITY | M.P. Pellicer

Prickly skin, a feeling that you're being watched or there's someone standing right behind (when there isn't) and a drop in temperature are all the hallmarks of the unearthly.

In Miami there are certain places where you're more likely to have these encounters with the other side.

"It was a dark and stormy night", the overused trope of gothic novels and low-budget films, can cause one to overlook that amongst the humming of insects, and the stillness of sub-tropical humidity the spirits of those who don't lie easy in their grave make their presence known. The Magic City has its own sordid history of murder, suicides, violence and secret burials that can provide a cast of thousands that can cause a shiver down your spine even in 80 degree weather. These are some of those places.

The God of Things as They Ought To Be | M.P. Pellicer

Florence Pretz a native of Kansas City held the design patent for a slant-eyed pudgy figure granted on October 6, 1908, known as the Billiken. Little did she imagine it would inspire a cult-like following.

The Billiken appeared in The Canada West, A Magazine of the Sunset Provinces in 1907. For 8 months the Billiken appeared in five Canada West stories, written by Sara Hamilton Birchall and illustrated by Florence Pretz. They were both friends who hailed from Kansas City, and moved to Chicago.
