What are the Odds That a Boy Exorcised by Jesuits in 1949, Would Grow Up to Work for NASA? | M.P. Pellicer

Many people keep secrets, especially from childhood, but Ronald Edwin Hunkeler's was unique. He was the boy that inspired the novel The Exorcist, written by William Peter Blatty, and released as a film in 1973.


In order to protect his identity the teenage boy was referred to as "Robbie Mannheim" or "Roland Doe" by the Jesuit priests who exorcised him. A handful of lay people knew the real name of the boy who endured a series of exorcisms in 1949.

Essential in exorcisms rites is backup, and the Vatican now uses all the modern tools at its disposal including a cellular phone to connect clergy to assistance and prayers.


Starting in 2018, a new tool was added to the arsenal of an exorcist's weapons—it's a cellular phone. Sprinkling holy water, chanting exorcism rituals in Latin are the cornerstone of the rites, but the Catholic Church must be inventive to meet the rising demands for exorcisms.

Forty Years of Exorcisms at a Miami Hospital | M.P. Pellicer

In 1974, an article appeared titled, Exorcism Daily Occurrence at Miami Jackson Hospital. Your first thought is this was due to the notorious film, The Exorcist.

However, according to Dr. Sukhdeo, the director of the Crisis Intervention Center at Miami Jackson Hospital at that time, the influx of patients as many as 900 in one month, had nothing to do with the film. He described how patients came in asking for evil spirits to be driven from their body, apparently believing that their symptoms, whether mental or physical, were demonic in their origin.
